The antioxidant action of DTPA is derived from its ability to chelate Fe 3+ and thus prevent its reaction with superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, leading to formation of hydroxyl radicals (i.e., preventing HaberWeiss and Fentons reactions) ( 3+ DTPA is slowly reduced by superoxide, which results in the production of fewer hydroxyl radicals (Rahhal and Richter, 1988)
