He studied art history and German in Munich and also worked as a photographer and assisted Herbert List on joint trips through Italy, Spain and Greece. In the 1950s he lived in Rome and worked as a freelance photojournalist in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Asia for magazines such as Picture Post, Look, Life, Paris Match and Mnchener Illustrierte. In 1959 he moved to
